Directive concerning to Food Imitations – 87/357/EEC – EU Directive concerning products which, appearing to be other than they are, endanger the health or safety of consumers.

In the UK: The Food Imitations (Safety) Regulations: 1989 No. 1292

 

 

Scope of the Directive / Regulation

 

The Directive / Regulation apply to the toys that could be confused with food by its form, odour, color, appearance, packaging, labeling, volume or size.

 

 

Basic Requirements of the Directive / Regulation

 

There should be no small part, sharp point, sharp edge before/after tension test

        90 N (20.2 lb) for dimension of accessible part > 6mm

50 N (11.2 lb) for dimension of accessible part < 6mm

 

There should be no small part after bite test (with bite jaw specified in BS 5239; and a force of

220 N (49.4 lb) is applied).
